At the Library
by Jolisa Weidner

Our children’s department remains a busy space after the close of our successful summer reading program. While I was checking in books this morning, I noticed all the books but one, was from the children’s section. We are happy to watch so many books leave the library in the hands of our young readers and are doing what we can to help them prevent the summer slide through our collection development, and new shelving. The recent addition of face out shelving next to our bin books, has made browsing more interesting as readers thumb through the books and can see the covers when they are making their choices. Patrons can find the new face out shelving on the back wall that includes books with CDs, and our many popular authors.

The shelving continues in our Learn to Read collection. The books on these shelves are arranged to help parents, and children select books that will help them develop in their reading journey. Primary readers are the start of these leveled reader books. These books have simple words and sentences and contain rhymes that help our youngest patrons to develop confidence in learning to read.As children progress in their reading ability, they can challenge themselves in the reader section. These books include paragraphs, and compound words, along with more vocabulary and dialogue. In between the primary and reader collection, patrons will find wonderful nonfiction books that are suited for young learners. It is a growing collection, and we are happy to hear your requests on books that could be added. We also have many comic books that are popular with our readers.Early chapter books complete this collection. These books are the stepping stone to our JF section. With shorter chapters, and fewer illustrations, our young readers move from learning to read, to reading to learn.

The staff at the library is here to assist you in finding the books that your young readers will love to take home to read in these last weeks of summer.
