At the Library
by Jolisa Weidner

Things are changing at the Washington Public Library. The book display in the front reading room is one new addition we are using to display books that might interest our patrons. Every month there is a new display to bring attention to specific materials in our collection and awareness of national campaigns unique to libraries. This month we have set up two book displays, one to celebrate Banned Books, and the other highlighting Hispanic Heritage month.

Libraries have celebrated Banned Books Week every year since 1982. This year’s theme is Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides Us. In a recent media statement, the ALA’s office for intellectual freedom reminds us that Banned Books Week “spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.” A list of banned and challenged books can be found on the ALA website. We have heard interesting conversations about these books that are in our collection. We appreciate the interest in the display, and the library will continue to support everyone’s right to read.

We also are preparing a display to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins September 15th.  The annual observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. It honors the history and culture of Americans whose ancestry can be traced to 20 countries. This year’s observance theme is; “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” and invites us all to reflect on the contributions and influence Hispanic Americans have made to the history, culture, and achievements for the United States in the past, and contributions they will continue to make in the future. It reminds us too that we are stronger together.

Browse our displays on both floors of the library when you visit us. We believe we have something for everyone. You just might be led to books you didn’t even know you wanted to read.
