At The Library
By: Jenna Messer
The transition from spring to summer is always one that brings about a lot of change which is especially true for me this year as a soon-to-be graduate of the class of 2022. Regardless, kids of all ages put a pause on scheduled intentional learning at school with summer break looming ahead. Summer brings on cleaning projects, vacations, swimming, barbecues, all of which soften us from the structure of our daily routines and from mentally pushing ourselves. The feeling of limbo that is part of June, July, and August often creates a vacuum for the desire to learn.
Let this summer be different. The Washington Public Library is a learning resource for all ages. Whether it be experimenting with a new hobby, researching family history, learning a new language, or trying out a new author or genre of book, the Washington Public Library is here for your enrichment. For school-aged children there are books that can help bridge the three-month gap of summer so that reading and math skills are not forgotten. For young adults there are both fiction and non-fiction titles to escape with in lieu of staring at a screen. Adults are not to be forgotten; they should be reminded that staying active is much more than keeping your heart rate up. Working out your brain is also an important part of staying healthy.
Consider making it a goal to never stop learning. This will look different for each person. It might mean picking up a biography, reading a book that has a different viewpoint than you, stepping outside of your comfort zone, or taking the time to talk to someone new. If there is something you have always wanted to do but have not gotten around to, try it this summer. One thing is for certain though, and that is that our library is overflowing with words, news, stories, and instructions. All that is missing is you.
